Bahrain gratuity rules at a glance
- Half a month's wage for each of the first three years.
- One month's wage for each year after three years.
- Partial years are counted in proportion.
- Bahrain uses the total wage (basic plus regular allowances).
- Since 1 March 2024, employers pay monthly contributions (4.2% of wage for the first three years, 8.4% after) to the SIO, which pays gratuity for service after that date. The employer still pays for service before March 2024.
Gratuity formula
Gratuity = (monthly wage ÷ 2 × years up to 3) + (monthly wage × years above 3).
Worked example
Faisal earns BHD 450 and worked 5 years. First 3 years: 450 ÷ 2 × 3 = BHD 675. Next 2 years: 450 × 2 = BHD 900. Total = BHD 1,575.

Who pays: employer or SIO?
For time worked after 1 March 2024, your gratuity is collected by the Social Insurance Organization through monthly employer contributions and paid out by the SIO when you leave. For earlier service your employer pays you directly. Ask your employer for a statement of both parts.
Tips before you leave your job
- Ask HR for a written final settlement that shows gratuity, unused leave, notice pay and any deductions.
- Check that the salary used is the right one: total wage (basic plus regular allowances).
- Keep copies of your contract, salary slips and bank statements.
- If you disagree with the amount, contact the Social Insurance Organization (SIO) before you leave the country.
