UAE overtime rules
- Normal working hours are up to 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week.
- Normal overtime: basic hourly wage + at least 25%.
- Night overtime (10pm–4am): basic hourly wage + at least 50% (shift workers excluded).
- Rest day or public holiday: a substitute day off, or basic hourly wage + at least 50%.
- Overtime should not normally exceed 2 hours a day.
- Senior managers and some supervisory roles may be excluded.
Formula
Hourly basic wage = monthly basic ÷ 30 ÷ 8. Overtime pay = hourly wage × 1.25 (or 1.5) × hours.
Example
Basic salary AED 4,000 → hourly wage 4,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = AED 16.67. Ten normal overtime hours = 16.67 × 1.25 × 10 = AED 208.33. Four night hours = 16.67 × 1.5 × 4 = AED 100.
Ramadan working hours
During Ramadan, private-sector working hours are usually reduced by two hours a day. Hours worked beyond the reduced schedule may count as overtime; check the official MOHRE announcement each year.
