Kuwait gratuity rules at a glance
- For monthly-paid workers: 15 days' wage for each of the first five years.
- One month's wage for each year after five years.
- The indemnity cannot exceed one and a half years' wage.
- Daily wage is commonly worked out as monthly wage ÷ 26 working days.
- If you resign: nothing under 3 years, half after 3–5 years, two-thirds after 5–10 years, and the full amount after 10 years.
- Full indemnity is paid if the employer ends the contract or it expires.
Gratuity formula
Daily wage = monthly wage ÷ 26. Indemnity = (15 × daily wage × years up to 5) + (monthly wage × years above 5), capped at 18 months' wage.
Worked example
Sameer earns KWD 400 a month and his contract ends after 8 years. Daily wage = 400 ÷ 26 = KWD 15.38. First 5 years: 15 × 15.38 × 5 = KWD 1,153.85. Next 3 years: 400 × 3 = KWD 1,200. Total = KWD 2,353.85.

Daily-paid workers
Workers paid by the day, week, hour or piece get 10 days' wage per year for the first five years and 15 days per year after that, capped at one year's wage. This calculator uses the monthly-paid rule, which covers most expats.
Tips before you leave your job
- Ask HR for a written final settlement that shows gratuity, unused leave, notice pay and any deductions.
- Check that the salary used is the right one: last monthly wage.
- Keep copies of your contract, salary slips and bank statements.
- If you disagree with the amount, contact the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) before you leave the country.
