How to Save Money While Working in the Gulf: A Practical Plan

By Ammar Aslam · Updated September 29, 2026

Many people go to the Gulf to save, but after years of work find they have little left. The problem is rarely income; it is usually planning. This simple plan works on any salary.

1. Know your real monthly income

Write down your salary after any deductions, and ignore overtime and bonuses for planning. Treat them as extra savings when they come.

2. Pay yourself first

On salary day, move a fixed amount to savings before spending anything. Many people aim for 20–30% of income; start with whatever you can and increase it each year.

3. Split what you send home

  • Family expenses: agree a fixed monthly amount with your family.
  • Your own savings: keep this separate, in an account in your name.
  • Goals: a house, education or business capital, each with a target amount and date.

4. Build an emergency fund where you work

Keep at least 2–3 months of expenses in the Gulf, so a job loss or medical bill does not force you into debt.

5. Be careful with credit

Credit cards and personal loans are easy to get in the Gulf, but unpaid debts can lead to travel bans and legal cases. Use credit only if you can pay the full balance each month.

6. Send money smartly

Compare exchange rates before sending, and send larger amounts less often if fees are fixed. See AED to PKR, SAR to PKR and how to send money to Pakistan.

7. Plan for the end of your job

Your gratuity is a lump sum you can plan for. Estimate it with our gratuity calculators and decide in advance how you will use it rather than spending it on arrival home.

Example budget

ItemShare of salary
Rent, food, transport in the Gulf35–45%
Family support at home25–35%
Your own savings and goals20–30%
Personal spending5–10%

Adjust these to your situation; the key is that savings is a fixed line, not what is left over.
